Star Trek Into Darkness opened with stellar numbers in the international market where weekend grosses of $5.5 million in Australia, $7.6 million in Germany, and $13.3 million in the United Kingdom add up to a 56% higher number than that of Star Trek (2009). Meanwhile, the film also grossed $3 million, in Mexico 250% more than the 2009 film, and New Zealand added another $885,961. With $31.7 million in seven countries just over the weekend, the new film may finally change the perception that Star Trek is solely a U.S. phenomenon.
This success should come as no surprise to J.J. Abrams and his cast, who put a lot of effort into setting the stage for the STID’s international opening. They worked on meeting the press, posing for photocalls and walking the red carpet at premieres in Germany, Australia, England, Mexico and Russia. The opening in Russia and China, as well as many other countries, will take place on May 16.
In the United States, Star Trek Into Darkness will open on May 16 and viewers can also enjoy a May 15 bow in IMAX 3D theaters.
