[#STLV] PREVIEW: Las Vegas Star Trek Convention 2016

It’s that time of year again — the annual Star Trek Las Vegas convention is upon us. This year, Creation Entertainment will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Star Trek franchise with their largest convention in history. With more than 100 celebrity guests, panels, discussions, costume contests, auctions, photo op areas and autograph sessions, this year’s convention has been extended to five days at the Rio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The sold out event kicks off this Wednesday and runs through Sunday.

This year’s lineup of celebrity guests include William Shatner, Whoopi Goldberg, Kirstie Alley, George Takei, Kate Mulgrew, Scott Bakula, Nichelle Nichols, Jeri Ryan, Walter Koenig, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, Michael Dorn, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton, Denise Crosby, Gates McFadden, James Darren, Robert Picardo, Garrett Wang, Tim Russ, Terry Farrell, Armin Shimerman, Nicole de Boer, Robert Beltran, Nana Visitor, Rene Auberjonois, Connor Trinneer, Dominic Keating, Robert Duncan McNeill, Ethan Phillips, Anthony Montgomery, John de Lancie and many more.

Here’s an overview of some of the event’s highlights.

Wednesday, August 3

On Wednesday, Roger Lay Jr. hosts a special “Look at Enterprise” panel with Connor Trinneer (Trip Tucker), Dominic Keating (Malcolm Reed), John Billingsley (Dr. Phlox) and Gary Graham. Adam Nimoy will appear on stage in a tribute to his father Leonard Nimoy. Gwynyth Walsh (B’Etor), JG Hertzler (Martok) and Robert O’Reilly (Gowron) will appear on stage in full Klingon costume. Chase Masterson will provide entertainment at Quark’s Bar in the Promenade area from 8-9pm.

Thursday, August 4

On Thursday, Creation’s Adam Malin hosts a panel with the stars of the Star Trek: The Original Series pilot “Where No Man Has Gone Before” with Gary Lockwood (Lt. Commander Mitchell) and Sally Kellerman (Dr. Dehner). Max Grodenchik (Rom) and Aron Eisenberg (Nog) will appear on stage in full Ferengi costume. Whoopi Goldberg appears on stage. Chris Doohan and Adam Nimoy will appear as part of the “Sons of Trek” panel.

Friday, August 5

On Friday, Roger Lay, Mike and Denise Okuda and Rod Roddenberry reveal never-seen-before clips and photos from The Original Series. Ethan Phillips (Neelix), Garrett Wang (Ensign Kim) and Tim Russ (Tuvok) appear on stage to talk Voyager. Gates McFadden (Dr. Crusher), LeVar Burton (Geordi LaForge), Brent Spiner (Data) will talk The Next Generation. Kirstie Alley (Saavik) makes her Star Trek convention debut to discuss The Wrath of Khan. Star Trek: Discovery executive producers Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth will talk the latest Roddenberry Entertainment projects. Nana Visitor (Kira Nerys), Terry Farrell (Jadzia Dax), Nicole de Boer (Ezri Dax) will appear on stage to discuss Deep Space Nine. Mary Czerwinski will host three Star Trek crafting workshops. Developers from Disruptor Beam will give an update on their popular mobile game Star Trek: Timelines.

Saturday, August 6

On Saturday, Doug Drexler, Roger Lay, Jr. and Scott Mantz will host a memorial for those we lost in 2016. Doug Drexler, Herman Zimmerman, Mike & Denise Okuda, and Ronald B. Moore will host a tribute to Matt Jefferies and the evolution of visual effects technology. William Shatner appears on stage. Scott Bakula will discuss Enterprise. Kate Mulgrew will appear on stage with four fans to discuss women in Star Trek. Michael Dorn (Worf) and Marina Sirtis (Counselor Troi) and Jonathan Frakes (Commander Riker) will discuss The Next Generation. Walter Koenig appears on stage. Kate Mulgrew will talk Voyager and her latest projects. Larry Nemecek will host his annual Star Trek trivia contest.

Sunday, August 6

On Sunday, Anthony Montgomery kicks things off with a Star Trek: Enterprise discussion. Robert Beltran (Chakotay), Robert Picardo (Holographic Doctor), Robbie Duncan McNeill (Lt. Tom Paris), and Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine) appear on stage to talk Voyager. Clint Howard (Balok), Jack Donner (Tal), Bobby Clark(The Gorn) and Sandy Gimpel (M-113 Creature) discuss aliens of TOS with Scott Mantz. Andrew Robinson (Garak), Armin Shimerman (Quark), Cirroc Lofton (Jake Sisko), James Darren (Vic Fontaine), Rene Auberjonois (Odo), Jeffrey Combs (Weyoun), and creative genius Ira Steven Behr discuss Deep Space Nine. Brannon Braga, Ronald D. Moore and Naren Shankar discuss the Star Trek writing process.
