The Biggest Star Trek Stories of 2016

This was a very big year for Star Trek. Throughout 2016, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the franchise, Star Trek Beyond, the third installment of the Kelvin Timeline film series was released, and members of the Star Trek: Discovery cast were confirmed by CBS. There was also heartbreak during the year, as we learned of the death of Anton Yelchin.

During CBS’ upfront presentation at Carnegie Hall on Wednesday, the network showed off the first teaser for the new Star Trek series on CBS All Access, which includes a new Star Trek logo. An interesting new take on the familiar Star Trek branding we’ve known for decades, the words “Star Trek” glisten on top of a distressed Starfleet insignia.

CBS Announces 50th Anniversary Star Trek Convention In New York City

With Star Trek’s 50th anniversary in full swing, CBS Consumer Products and ReedPOP announced the launch of a new Star Trek fan experience that will take place in New York City later this year titled Star Trek: Mission New York.

Here it is! The highly-anticipated second trailer for STAR TREK BEYOND!

Following the release of the first action-heavy trailer, featuring the Beastie Boys’ song “Sabotage”, dropped in December 2015, many speculated that the film would be “The Fast and the Furious in space”. Star Trek Beyond co-writer and star Simon Pegg said that premature evaluation was “reductive, asinine criticism”.

Bryan Fuller Named Showrunner of New Star Trek Series

Bryan Fuller, who has previously worked on “Star Trek: Voyager” and “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine”, along with “Hannibal” and “Heroes”, has been named showrunner and co-creator of the new Star Trek series, which is set to premiere on CBS All Access in 2017.

Anton Yelchin Killed in Freak Accident at 27

In what can only be described as tragic news, Anton Yelchin passed away at the age of 27 on Sunday morning, following what is being called a “freak” car accident.

TMZ is reporting that friends of Yelchin went to his home at around 1 a.m. “and found him pinned between his car and a brick mailbox.”

STAR TREK Forever Stamps To Launch In The US

The United States Postal Service has announced the launch of the highly-anticipated Star Trek Forever stamps to celebrate to 50th anniversary of the franchise.

A “first-day-of-issue” ceremony will take place on Friday Sept. 2, and will officially launch the Star Trek: Mission New York convention.

Now 20 days into its release, Star Trek Beyond is underperforming in the box office despite its excellent opening weekend and positive critical reception.

Bryan Fuller Steps Down As ‘Discovery’ Showrunner

Bryan Fuller has stepped down as showrunner of Star Trek: Discovery. This news comes about a month before the series is set to start filming and was first reported by Variety.

Fuller, who previously worked on Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, signed on as showrunner for Discovery in February. Fuller reportedly stepped down from this position due to a strained workload between Discovery and two other projects he is involved in: American Gods for Starz, and NBC’s Amazing Stories.

Michelle Yeoh Cast As Captain In STAR TREK: DISCOVERY

Following Tuesday’s rumor of Michelle Yeoh being cast in the upcoming Star Trek: Discovery series, it is now being reported that the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon actress will play a Starfleet Captain.

It should be noted that Yeoh’s character will captain the Starship Shenzhou and not the show’s featured ship, the Discovery.
