British actor, James Frain, will play Spock’s father, Sarek, on Star Trek: Discovery, when it launches later this year. The casting news was announced on Wednesday by CBS Television Studios.
Frain’s resume includes work on Agent Carter, Orphan Black, Gotham, Prime Suspect, Elizabeth, The Tudors, FlashForward, True Blood and Tron Legacy.
The Sarek character was previously played by Mark Lenard on Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation and by Ben Cross in the 2009 Star Trek film.
Frain joins previously announced cast members Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Michelle Yeoh, Chris Obi, Shazad Latif and Mary Chieffo.
Star Trek: Discovery is set to begin filming next week in Toronto.
The first episode of Star Trek: Discovery will premiere with a broadcast TV special on CBS later this year. That episode and all subsequent episodes will be exclusively shown in the U.S. on the video streaming service CBS All Access.
Alex Kurtzman, Bryan Fuller and Rod Roddenberry will act as executive producers, with Nicholas Meyer (director of The Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country and co-writer of The Voyage Home) and Kirsten Beyer serving as a writers and consulting producers. Stepping in for Bryan Fuller as co-showrunners are Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts.
