‘Discovery’ Writer Ted Sullivan Answers More Fan Questions

Star Trek: Discovery writer Ted Sullivan answers more fan questions in second Twitter Q&A

Star Trek: Discovery writer Ted Sullivan took to Twitter again to answer fans’ burning (non-spoiler) questions about the upcoming series, following a similar Q&A yesterday with fellow Discovery writer Kirsten Beyer.

Sullivan was asked about the tone of the show, and he revealed there will be an emphasis on drama, with a touch of humor.

Sullivan was then asked about what he thought was the biggest missed opportunity in Star Trek history, and he thought the characterization in The Original Series was a major weak point.

When asked about his reaction to Captain Kirk’s death in Generations, Sullivan was critical of the way William Shatner’s legendary character exited the franchise.

When asked about Jason Isaacs’ performance as Captain Lorca, Sullivan said it was “riveted” by the actor’s portrayal of the Discovery‘s captain.

Sullivan mentioned how he thinks fans will “love how diverse and inclusive this show is,” and that the show will continue Star Trek’s tradition of holding a mirror to society. He also characterized Discovery has setting a new direction in terms of similarity to other Star Trek shows.

Sullivan also presented a varied list of his top Star Trek villains, with Nomad from the TOS episode “The Changeling” taking the top spot.

The last interesting tidbit from this Q&A was Sullivan’s word association with other Star Trek shows. Of course, he couldn’t specify the word for Discovery yet.

Discovery‘s 15-episode first season will premiere on September 24 at 8:30 PM ET. Immediately following the first episode’s release, the second episode will be available on CBS All Access, with subsequent episodes released on Sundays. The first eight episodes will run from September 24 through November 5, with the series returning in January 2018.

The cast includes Michelle Yeoh (Captain Philippa Georgiou) Sonequa Martin-Green (First Officer Michael Burnham), Jason Isaacs(Captain Lorca), Chris Obi (T’Kuvma), Doug Jones (Lt. Saru), James Frain(Sarek), and Shazad Latif (Kol), Anthony Rapp (Lt. Stamets), Sam Vartholomeos (Ensign Connor), Mary Wiseman (Cadet Tilly), Mary Chieffo(L’Rell) and Rainn Wilson (Harry Mudd).

Gretchen Berg, Aaron Harberts, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Heather Kadin and Alex Kurtzman are executive producers on the series. Nicholas Meyer, Kirsten Beyer and Ted Sullivan are serving as a writers and consulting producers.
