Jonathan Frakes Reveals Major ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Plot Point

Jonathan Frakes, TNG’s William Riker and director for an unnamed Star Trek: Discovery episode, has revealed that the new show will be doing a Mirror Universe episode. This keeps in tradition with a major recurring theme in the Star Trek universe.

Speaking at Creation Entertainment’s Continuing Voyage Tour in Chicago with his other TNG castmates on stage, Frakes not only opined that he thinks the show’s pilot is “amazing,” but that the show will do a Mirror Universe episode. This comes from tweets issued by the Star Trek-themed band Five Year Mission, who were performing at the event. No other information on the episode was reported.

The Mirror Universe, a reality that reflects the worse in humanity, was first seen in the 1967 episode “Mirror, Mirror.” Since then it has become a staple of Star Trek, appearing in five episodes of Deep Space Nine and two episodes of Enterprise, as well as numerous comics, novels, and video games. While the news that Discovery is addressing the Mirror Universe isn’t totally surprising, it will be interesting to see how the crew reacts to it, as Discovery takes place before Captain Kirk crosses into the universe in “Mirror, Mirror.”
