William Shatner Says VR Is The Key To Bringing His Capt. Kirk Back To Star Trek

William Shatner, who hasn’t played the role of Star Trek‘s Captain James T. Kirk in more than 20 years — aside from an appearance at the Oscars a few years ago and reading Kirk’s his autobiography — believes that virtual reality and CGI is the key to his return as the iconic character.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Shatner, now 86, said:

I recently connected with a virtual reality company Ziva and they have virtual-realized me in 240 cameras all around shooting me. So they can now produce my body and my face in any way, shape, or form — including what I was like 50 years ago.

Shatner’s Captain Kirk was of course killed by Tolian Soran while trying to save the inhabitants of Veridian IV and his Enterprise crew in 1994’s Star Trek: Generations.

Last year, Shatner said he was ready to play Kirk once again but noted that the problem is that there is already a “youthful existence” (Chris Pine’s Kirk) already in the captain’s chair.
