Martin-Green, Yeoh Offer Thoughts on STAR TREK: DISCOVERY’s Diversity

Following one of the best Star Trek traditions, Star Trek: Discovery spotlights diversity both in its on-screen cast and off-screen crew. Perfect examples of this are two of the series’ leads, Michelle Yeoh and Sonequa Martin-Green, who recently offered their thoughts on casting in Hollywood.

Speaking with Vulture, Yeoh, who is the first Malaysian-born lead in a Star Trek show, explained how times have changed since she started her career.

“I remember when I first came to Hollywood, and a director, who is a good friend, said if they cast a black male lead, they won’t be able to cast me,” Yeoh said. “How times have changed! I’m so blessed that I am still in [the industry] while it is changing.

Martin-Green offered her thoughts on this changing industry, as she opined that Star Trek’s casting was a “divine process,” and that it required determination to follow through with utilizing diversity. “I feel God worked it out,” she added.
