Former Star Trek: Discovery Showrunner Bryan Fuller Describes Series In Three Words

Byan Fuller, who stepped down as Star Trek: Discovery showrunner in October, recently discussed his departure along with a short description of the new series.

“I couldn’t do what needed to be done in the time that they needed it done,” Fuller told the Radio Times in a recent interview. “And I felt like there was so much responsibility happening with American Gods, that it seemed like the cleanest approach to the problem.”

He went on to describe the show, which launches on CBS and on CBS All Access in May, in three words.

“I think what we were doing with Star Trek was… I’d say, ‘Understand Each Other,'” Fuller said. “I’m very curious to see how it unfolds.”

Prior to his departure, Fuller penned the first two episodes of the series along with an outline of the first season.

“I submitted stories for the entire season,” Fuller explained. “So, I wrote the first two episodes and I wrote the storyline for the entire season, and that essentially completes my responsibilities to the show.”

While his outline will likely be taken into account, Fuller acknowledged that the new show runners, Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts, could potentially deviate from his original plan.

“I know where we were going before I left, but I don’t where they were going to take it after I’ve left.”

He went on to discuss the possibility of rejoining Discovery in the future, saying “If they need me, they have my number and they can call me,”.

The first episode of Star Trek: Discovery will premiere with a broadcast TV special on CBS in May. That episode and all subsequent episodes will be exclusively shown in the U.S. on the video streaming service CBS All Access.

Alex Kurtzman, Bryan Fuller and Rod Roddenberry have also been announced as executive producers, with Nicholas Meyer (director of The Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country and co-writer of The Voyage Home) and Kirsten Beyer serving as a writers and consulting producers. Stepping in for Bryan Fuller as co-showrunners are Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts.
