11 Things We Learned About DISCOVERY’s Second Season At SDCC + Watch The Full Panel

Star Trek: Discovery cast and crew took part in a featured panel in Hall H at San Diego Comic Con on Friday to promote the upcoming second season of the CBS All Access series.

Cast members Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Mary Chieffo, Wilson Cruz, Anson Mount, Mary Wiseman, Shazad Latif, along with Executive Producers Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin discussed and gave details of season two, in the panel moderated by Tig Notaro.

Now, we’ve got video of the entire panel, if you weren’t able to make it to San Diego, you can check it out below. But first, let’s take a look at 11 new things we learned about season 2 of Discovery.

What We Learned From The Star Trek: Discovery SDCC Panel:

  1. Alex Kurtzman says post production takes about eight months, hence the January 2019 premiere date.
  2. Kurtzman says we’ll get four short episodes in December, each focusing on a particular character.
  3. Kurtzman also confirmed that we’ll see Spock this season
  4. Mary Chieffo says her character, L’Rell, is trying to be the best chancellor she can be following the end of season one, while “upholding T’Kuvma’s mission.”
  5. Shazid Latif says his character, Ash Tyler, is struggling to find his find his place in universe in season two.
  6. Doug Jones says the makeup team has gotten the process for Saru down to under two hours.
  7. Anton Mount, the new Christopher Pike, reveals that we’ll see Number One played by Rebecca Romijn. The character was originally played by Majel Roddenberry.
  8. Mount also says he met Chris Hunter, Jeffrey Hunter’s son, who was in the panel audience. Hunter said that his father would have been happy with Mount’s casting.
  9. Heather Kadin says that before season one started filming, about 400 people read for Michael Burham before Sonequa Martin-Green got the role.
  10. Prompted by a fan question, Alex Kurzman non-committedly says we’ll “maybe” see Prime Universe Lorca in season two.
