Alex Kurtzman Discusses Star Trek: Discovery’s Connection To Original Series

Star Trek: Discovery producer Alex Kurtzman recently discussed what fans can expect from the show’s first season.

“The story that we have for season one is really interesting and special, and I think it pays tribute to a lot of what Trek has done, and in many ways is actually doing it in a new way,” said Kurtzman.

Discovery‘s Strong Female Characters

Considering the show will have various female lead characters, Kurtzman offered some thoughts on both Sonequa Martin-Green (Michael Burnham) and Michelle Yeoh (Captain Georgiou).

“To have Sonequa and Michelle, as captains of our ship, is really exciting and different,” said Kurtzman speaking to CNET. “I love stories that are based around strong women. And we have some very strong women on that show. [Martin-Green] is bringing up a flavor to the character, that I feel like I haven’t actually seen in Trek and that’s really, really exciting.”

Discovery‘s Connection to The Original Series

As Discovery is set in Star Trek’s “prime universe,” continuity with other Star Trek lore is a common point of concern for many fans, as well as the show’s writers.

“If you’re a fan of Trek, you’re going to see a lot of things [in Discovery] that harkens back to The Original Series,” noted Kurtzman. “I’m not just talking plot. I mean, the spirit of what that show was. We’re going to be revisiting a couple things on Discovery that I think people will find familiar. And without spoiling anything, we are adhering to a timeline and sticking to the rules, but also I think finding some new areas and avenues of exploration that have been only alluded to. You have to understand the timelines… and how they all worked together”

Discovery‘s 15-episode first season will premiere on September 24 at 8:30 PM ET on CBS. Immediately following the first episode’s release, the second episode will be available on CBS All Access, with subsequent episodes released on Sundays. The first eight episodes will run from September 24 through November 5, with the series returning in January 2018.
