Alex Kurtzman Discusses Star Trek: Discovery’s Connection To Original Series

Alex Kurtzman On Star Trek: Discovery's Connection To The Original Series

Star Trek: Discovery producer Alex Kurtzman recently discussed what fans can expect from the show’s first season.

“The story that we have for season one is really interesting and special, and I think it pays tribute to a lot of what Trek has done, and in many ways is actually doing it in a new way,” said Kurtzman.

Discovery‘s Strong Female Characters

Considering the show will have various female lead characters, Kurtzman offered some thoughts on both Sonequa Martin-Green (Michael Burnham) and Michelle Yeoh (Captain Georgiou).

“To have Sonequa and Michelle, as captains of our ship, is really exciting and different,” said Kurtzman speaking to CNET. “I love stories that are based around strong women. And we have some very strong women on that show. [Martin-Green] is bringing up a flavor to the character, that I feel like I haven’t actually seen in Trek and that’s really, really exciting.”

Discovery‘s Connection to The Original Series

As Discovery is set in Star Trek’s “prime universe,” continuity with other Star Trek lore is a common point of concern for many fans, as well as the show’s writers.

“If you’re a fan of Trek, you’re going to see a lot of things [in Discovery] that harkens back to The Original Series,” noted Kurtzman. “I’m not just talking plot. I mean, the spirit of what that show was. We’re going to be revisiting a couple things on Discovery that I think people will find familiar. And without spoiling anything, we are adhering to a timeline and sticking to the rules, but also I think finding some new areas and avenues of exploration that have been only alluded to. You have to understand the timelines… and how they all worked together”

Discovery‘s 15-episode first season will premiere on September 24 at 8:30 PM ET on CBS. Immediately following the first episode’s release, the second episode will be available on CBS All Access, with subsequent episodes released on Sundays. The first eight episodes will run from September 24 through November 5, with the series returning in January 2018.

The cast of Star Trek: Discovery includes Michelle Yeoh (Captain Philippa Georgiou) Jason Isaacs (Captain Gabriel Lorca), Sonequa Martin-Green (First Officer Michael Burnham), Chris Obi (T’Kuvma), Doug Jones (Lt. Saru), James Frain(Sarek), and Shazad Latif (Kol), Anthony Rapp (Lt. Stamets), Sam Vartholomeos (Ensign Connor), Mary Wiseman (Cadet Tilly), Mary Chieffo (L’Rell) and Rainn Wilson (Harry Mudd).

Gretchen Berg, Aaron Harberts, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Heather Kadin and Alex Kurtzman are executive producers on the series. Nicholas Meyer, Kirsten Beyer and Ted Sullivan are serving as a writers and consulting producers.

It was announced recently that Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s Jonathan Frakes will direct at least one episode of the show.

“we are adhering to a timeline and sticking to the rules”

Really? WHERE? Those are not Klingons we have seen, even though you are calling them Klingons. The Discovery herself does not conform to Federation/Starfleet design themes or proportions, the tech shown with holographic displays is not Star Trek, and that laughable “transporter room” shown recently defies explanation. This is nothing like Star Trek, just like the reboot movies are not Star Trek.

Kurtzman is the same dude who gave us the NuTrek universe in JJ Abrams’ movies, none of which have been Star Trek. I think if he knew what Star Trek was supposed to be, we would not be seeing any of the stuff we have been seeing coming close to airing of this show. It might have been better to just have seized Axanar and expanded on it using it’s CGI models and crew with new writers and perhaps a new cast. This show is going to fail.
