In September, CBS officially announced Star Trek: The Next Generation would be remastered and re-released in high-definition on Blu-Ray. The first of the remastered offerings, a four-episode sampler disc entitled Star Trek: The Next Generation – The Next Level, is scheduled to be released on January 31, 2012.
Complete seasons of TNG in HD will be released later in the year.
As we announced previously, the episodes on that sampler disc will include the two-part episode “Encounter at Farpoint” along with “Sins of the Father”, and “The Inner Light”.
However, there seems to be a small problem. On Monday, CBS sent a notice to retailers addressing a 13-second issue with “Sins of the Father”.
“Sins of the Father” – 13 seconds of the original film elements for this episode have not been located and thus have been upconverted from Standard Definition videotape.

Trust me, when you see it pop up while watching the Blu Ray disc you WILL notice the difference….it’s like, “Whoa! That ain’t the same.” Really!

I wonder if they wished they had picked a different episode for the sampler after realizing that issue. You usually want your first release to be the best and set the tone for what’s to come. Like most have said though, it’s not a huge deal.

I’ll probably buy both the sampler and the box set either way, but there is a reason why I only bought one season. The SD masters are crap. I hope they consider using an alternate take or finding some way to NOT use SD footage in the final box set release.
If there are no alternate takes or no other options available, I hope they actually take some time to polish it and make it presentable. Seeing as how there are only 390 frames or so in 13 seconds, it shouldn’t be too bad to take extra time to enhance it. The DVDs look like crap.
