Riverside Iowa’s ‘Trek Fest’ in Need of a Financial Backer

Trek FestTrek Fest, the annual Star Trek festival which takes place in Riverside, Iowa, the “future birthplace” of Captain James T. Kirk, is facing the possibility of not taking place this year due to budgetary constraints.

The Riverside Area Community Club (RACC), which organizes a variety of events throughout the year, including Trek Fest, has said it lacks the funds necessary to stage this year’s festival. In year’s past Trek Fest has been dependent on city funds to stage the event and to book Star Trek actors for appearances. This year, however, such funds have been refused.

Organizers are hopeful a financial backer will swoop in and assist in making sure the 2011 Trek Fest (tentatively scheduled for June 24 – 25) will take place.

“I know what (Trek Fest) means to the small businesses in downtown Riverside,” said Dan Kehl, the CEO of Riverside Casino & Golf Resort, who has offered a $3,000 grant for anyone willing to match it.

I’ve always read great things about Trek Fest, and smaller conventions in general. It’d be a shame for it to not take place this year. C’mon Riverside!

It really is too bad. If I had the cash, I’d do it.
