Del Toro Out, Ramirez & Molla Possibilities for Star Trek Sequel Villain

As we reported earlier this week, negotiations have fallen through with Benicio del Toro for the upcoming Star Trek sequel. With a start date looming, J.J. Abrams is moving quickly to recast the role of the film’s main villain. According to Variety, Abrams now has his eye on two other actors, Edgar Ramirez (pictured) and Jordi Molla.

Ramirez, a Venezuelan actor and the current frontrunner, is best known for his role in Olivier Assayas’ miniseries, Carlos. Molla most recently starred in Colombiana alongside Star Trek‘s Zoe Saldana.

While the direction of the casting has led most to believe the role to be Khan, both Abrams and Paramount have both denied it.

Most of the main cast from the 2009 film will return, including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Anton Yelchin. New additions include Alice Eve and Peter Weller.

We’ll have more on this story along with all of the breaking news related to the Star Trek sequel, here on TrekNews.net.

“…lead most to believe…” No, really only the racists. This movie is set in the FUTURE, you know. I assume in that context a Latin actor would be allowed to play other roles besides Khan. Of course, the only reason “most” believe the Khan rumor in the first place is because a Latin actor played the character before. If Abrams can have a Chinese actor play Sulu (an explicitly Japanese character), maybe they can branch out and have a South Asian play Khan. Maybe they can have the Latin guy play a young José I. Mendez (eventually became Commodore, CO of Starbase 11)

Jordi Molla would make a great Star Trek villain no matter what the role is.
