Maria Menounos: “I Can Quote Lines From Episodes of the Original Star Trek”

Celebrity Star Trek Fan: Maria Menounos

Maria Menounos, host of ABC’s Extra and contestant on the 14th season of Dancing With The Stars is the most recent “celebrity trekkie.” In an article entitled “25 Things You Don’t Know About Me: Maria Menounos” in the April 2012 issue of Us Weekly, the 33-year old Menounos reveals, among other fun facts, that she is a Star Trek fan.

“I can quote lines from episodes of the original Star Trek,” shares Maria, who is currently one of the top contestants in the show Dancing with the Stars. She and her partner Derek Hough performed a particularly strong Latin dance piece which showcased fast and complex choreography, very revealing outfits and a somewhat scandalous on-stage kiss.

But 26-year old professional dancer and choreographer Derek, who has won Dancing with the Stars three times already, may just have a “nerdy” side of his own, too: in 2001, he was an extra in the movie Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone where he appeared in an un-credited role as a “Hogwarts schoolboy.”

In the midst of Maria’s growing fame, various celebrity gossip publications have noted that Maria was not a popular girl in high school and allegedly did not have her first kiss until she was 18. This makes one wonder how much more authentic Maria and Derek’s performance would have looked if, instead of kissing on stage, they both wore a pair of nice Vulcan ears to go with either a passionate salsa, or a well-rehearsed waltz.

Other recently admitted celebrity Star Trek fans include That ’70s Show‘s Mila Kunis and TRON: Legacy‘s Olivia Wilde.

I’m always a bit skeptical with these celeb “geeks.” It just seems like the cool thing to do and say right now, but who knows.
