STAR TREK BEYOND Tops Box Office in Opening Weekend

Star Trek Beyond ruled the box office in its opening weekend, generating almost $60 million against competitors The Secret Life of Pets and Ice Age: Collision.

This $60 million comes from its $22 million showing on Friday, its $20.6 million showing on Saturday, and its $16 million showing on Sunday. Its first Monday showing generated $6.2 million.

While enough to place it first in the box office, Beyond’s opening weekend gross is lower than its predecessors ($72 million for Star Trek, and $70 million for Into Darkness). Four days into its release, Beyond has grossed $95.5 million, which includes $30 million internationally.

The first Star Trek reboot ended its run with $385.7 million, and Into Darkness finished with $467.4 million. The budgets for those two movies were $150 million and $190 million, respectively, while Beyond came in at $185 million.

In its second weekend, Beyond will have to compete with Jason Bourne and Bad Moms. While Beyond has some work to do to make up its budget, the film has yet to premiere in several foreign markets.

I’m surprised by how small the marketing campaign for this movie is — or I guess was, since it appears to be over.

Anyway, I liked this one more than Into Darkness. The story has a 60’s Trek directness that the last adventure lacked. Some of the visuals were very inventive. The Spock prime stuff was handled nicely.

If you don’t like this series — ST: Beyond probably won’t Change your mind. If you do, you’ll appreciate all the little nods to Trek history that add context to this very action heavy (and fun to watch) movie. There were several small moments that let us catch up with the crew. They were fun for me as a fan — and upped the tension during the action sequences.
