WATCH: Star Trek: The Motion Picture Recut With Daft Punk’s Tron: Legacy Score

Star Trek: The Motion Picture Meets Draft Punk

No, that headline isn’t a mistake.

One wouldn’t assume Star Trek and the French electronic music duo Daft Punk belong together in the same sentence, but like Spock said, “there are always possibilities.”

In this case, Vimeo user Patrick Collins created a 22-minute recut of Star Trek: The Motion Picture using Daft Punk’s original motion picture score for Tron: Legacy. The result is a surprisingly fitting video, with plodding electronic music that matches the darker, slower-paced mood of The Motion Picture.

“I always thought the two film’s scores were very reminiscent of one another and I wanted to use that to give this recut a more updated feel while still maintaining some aspect of the pacing and staging of the original (very long) film and its big special effect scenes,” said Collins in his video post.

Watching now…Wow, this really highlights the importance of soundtracks. The dark, almost foreboding feel of the Daft Punk music makes this feel like a totally different movie! Great!

As much as I love the Jerry Glodsmith score, this works very well indeed.

INCREDIBLE!!! Though Jerry Goldsmith’s original score (and Kirk’s admiral uniform) was the best thing about Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Daft Punk’s TRON soundtrack was a masterpiece and fit perfectly together with these Trek scenes, and even maintains the integrity of the story line from start to finish. Thanks to Patrick for sharing this with the world, and to Kyle for bringing it to our attention.

Awesome ! I love Goldsmith, My favorite Movie Composer, But this works well. I always thought if they just cut 1/2 hour out of that movie, it would be better. The music of Star Trek is great, but this really shows you how different music can affect your perception of a movie. Well Done !

Now, If they would only cut 2001 with different music…. Hmmmmmm…..

The old ST musci was getting really old, so this was a real treat and calls attention to how much the whole thing needed a shot of something new.
