STAR TREK All Access Episodes Will Roll Out Weekly, On Target For January Premiere

STAR TREK All Access Series Episodes Will Roll Out Weekly

The new Star Trek series set to premier on CBS All Access streaming platform early next year was a topic of discussion during today’s CBS first-quarter earnings call. We now know that the series will indeed premiere in January 2017 and that the episodes will be delivered on a weekly basis.

Regarding the new Star Trek series, produced by CBS Television Studios, Moonves committed to a January premiere and said that new episodes of the series would roll out weekly on the streaming platform, instead of the “all-at-once” approach taken by Netflix and Amazon.

As we previously reported, the new series will begin filming in September at Pinewood Toronto Studios in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

The first episode of the new series will premiere with a broadcast TV special on CBS. The first episode and all subsequent episodes will be exclusively shown in the US on the video streaming service CBS All Access.

Alex Kurtzman, Bryan Fuller and Rod Roddenberry have been announced as executive producers, with Nicholas Meyer (director of The Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country and co-writer of The Voyage Home) is serving as a writer and consulting producer.

This will be the first Star Trek series I will not follow because I will not pay CBS even more than i already do for cable/satellite just so I can watch it on demand. Screw you CBS.

The sad thing is, I bet CBS will take the wrong lesson from it. Instead of “Oh, our CBS All Access model is flawed, we should get rid of it,” they’ll just decided that no one cares about Star Trek anymore. Sad.

You never know, but I believe the distribution model for this show is poorly conceived at best. Sadly, it’s more likely than not to fail IMHO. As many others have already commented, it’ll be written off as a failure of the brand. [ROLL EYES]

The suits at CBS are hopelessly out of touch with reality. I’m betting they’re going to try and “force” a monthly subscription by withdrawing earlier episodes as the series progresses – thereby removing the possibility of a one-off payment and “binge watch” at the end of the season.

With the success of the Marvel shows on Netflix, Trek could’ve have a strong shot at coming back big and being really relevant again on a platform like that. What a missed opportunity.

There’s no way I’m paying a monthly fee for one show. I’ll wait and buy it outright. They’ll still get paid & I’ll feel smug.

And when will it come to Netflix….??? Because that’s how things work these days. Good luck CBS, you benign old fossil…
