In the last 49 years of Star Trek, we’ve seen a cavalcade of different characters, species and personalities. However, we’ve never witnessed the franchise truly go in an overly dark direction — aside from elements of Deep Space Nine and in 2012’s Star Trek Into Darkness. With a new Star Trek television series on the horizon and the trend of Marvel’s “cinematic universe,” Paramount’s Motion Picture Group president Marc Evan speculates how the franchise could expand, in an interview with WIRED.
“I often think about the areas of the Star Trek universe that haven’t been taken advantage of,” Evans said.
“Like, I’ll be ridiculous with you, but what would Star Trek: Zero Dark Thirty look like? Where is the SEAL Team Six of the Star Trek universe? That fascinates me.”
What do you think of Star Trek moving in a grittier direction? Tell us in the comments below.

Leland, I promise I’m not trying to pick a fight with you here – we’re all entitled to our opinions of course. But I must admit, I’m getting really, really tired of reading variants on the “it’s not “REAL” Star Trek” denunciations that are casually thrown around by some fans.
I’m not necessarily directing this at you, but that sort of commentary does come over as extremely narrow-minded, and, for me, the complete antithesis of one of Trek’s central “philosophies” – IDIC. It genuinely surprises me many fans of the show are so dismissive and intolerant when it comes to the next generation (no pun).
It’s EXACTLY the same tired old rhetoric many TOS diehard’s were levelling at TNG back in ’87. “How very dare they”, “it’s not “real” Star Trek” and so forth. Honestly, I can’t help but smile – the wheel has apparently come full about. IMO, many of those fresh, open minded, fledgling Trekkers of the late 80’s/early 90’s have unwittingly become clones of those TOS zealots!
Although it may not be “real” Star Trek to you, I can assure you, it very much *is* to me – and I speak as a long standing fan of many decades. The Bad Robot films may not fall in line with *your* perceived construct for the show, but to me, they are a true return to the action/adventure roots of TOS. And, yes, I find both films to be exceptionally uplifting and hopeful actually. Oh, they’re tremendous FUN to boot!
For me, DS9, is a million, million light years away from my “vision” of what Star Trek should be. All the pseudo-religious doctrines that permeated throughout, spirit walking, “prophets”, “Pah-wraiths”, tedious wars etc etc.
However, *it is* Star Trek, I would never denounce it as otherwise. It has been produced and released under the Star Trek banner, and I simply view it as the “flavour” of the franchise I care for the least. I respect its fans and would certainly not nonchalantly call it out as “drek”.

It’s called Section 31. You should try watching the series some time.

That was already explored on Enterprise. PS: It’s comments like this from studio people that are why Star Trek is in the crappy state it’s in now. They have no idea what they are doing.

That’s fine. PLEASE PLEASE just keep this series in the Prime Universe. Please.

Sure, situations or premises can be dark. But Star Trek is about a hopeful future. A positive one if we make the right decisions. And, it’s about reflection on our actions. Not about action in terms of movie genre.

I am all for it as long as its a serious look at how StarFleet SF or ground forces would be like. Please get some consultants that have been in the military to help out. Trust me tons of us Active and veterans love ST and would love to help out with a new series. It would be a great way to explore and deal with the issues of today.

The Video Game Elite Force(And Elite Force 2) explored this subject a decade and a half ago. With the “Hazard Team”.

Star Trek is about a hopeful positive future for mankind. This proposal is exactly the opposite of that. The point is that humans have passed the need for those kinds of organisations. It’s the same problem I had with section 31 in DS9

Set an entire series in the evil alternate universe. Humans have a vast empire and rule with a heavy hand across the galaxy. If they wanted to connect it to the “Prime” universe somehow, they could do the story of how the Klingons and Cardassians rebelled and took the galaxy for themselves. If not, then retell the story of the human empire perspective as it meets all the threats already seen in Star Trek (Whale probe, Borg, Dominion, Species 8472…). Everyone must have goatees…
