[PREVIEW] Star Trek Mission: New York

Star Trek Mission: New York is fast approaching, beaming down to the Javits Center in New York City on Friday September 2nd through Sunday September the 4th. This is the first year for Mission New York as a convention and it’s offering an impressive and unique line-up for all three days.

TrekNews.net is here to provide you our list of our highlights and what has us excited this upcoming Labor Day weekend!

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 2nd:

The History and Future of Star Trek Novels

12:00 PM – 1:00 PM
Location: 1A23

We’ve always been big fans of the expanded universe that has been created in the Star Trek novels. Since taking over the franchise rights, Pocket Books has done a tremendous job of ensuring that its novels all share a cohesive and connected continuity, post-Nemesis. For many fans, the Pocket Books universe is the only place you can still follow on-going stories from the 24th century. Join panelists David Alan Mack, Edward Schlesinger, Margaret Clark, Marco Palmieri, and Michael Jan Friedman as they talk about the history and future of Trek novels!

Trek Talks: An Examination of Literature and Star Trek

3:00 PM – 4 PM
Location: 1A23

Star Trek has always been rich with literary references that provide a common touchstone for the audience and for society at large. Amy Imhoff (who hosted a similar panel at this year’s Las Vegas Star Trek Convention, looking at Shakespeare’s influence on Trek), Jonathan Alexandratos, Anika Dane, and Anastasia Klimchynskaya look at the impact of these influences and how it continues to shape Star Trek to this day. Panels with audience participation are always great fun and this panel will be soliciting live feedback!

Wrath of Khan

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan 4K World Premiere

6:15 PM – 8:15 PM
Location: Main Stage

This is going to be a huge treat for fans! As you may well know, the Wrath of Khan has been in the spotlight lately with the recent release of the Director’s Cut on Blu-Ray, and now the 4K restoration of this film is being premiered at Mission New York with an actual Q&A with director Nicholas Meyer himself. This is a can’t miss for fans!

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 3rd:

Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek: Discovery Q&A

3:30 PM – 4:30 PM
Location: Main Stage

In what is arguably the most hotly anticipated news coming out of the convention thus far, an exclusive Q&A session with Star Trek: Discovery writers Nicolas Meyer (Wrath of Khan director) and Kristen Beyer (Voyager novelist) will be held. The panel will look at their historic involvement with Star Trek and what brought back to be involved with the new series. Many fans, ourselves included, are absolutely ecstatic to be able to listen to these two Trek luminaries and to see if any more Discovery details will be announced!

Staged Reading of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

5:00 PM – 6:30 PM

Location: Main Stage

This is probably one of the most unique panels we’ve heard about at any Trek convention! Some well-known actors from TV and film (including some Trek actors themselves) will be doing a never-to-be-repeated stage reading of The Voyage Home, which marks its 30th anniversary of this year. This sounds it’s going to be a WHALE of a good time! Sorry about the pun, but we had to!

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 4th
:

Queer Trekkers: Gene Roddenberry’s Galactic Utopias

3:45 PM – 4:45 PM
Location: 1A23

This is a panel has been a long time coming and we are very excited to finally see the first panel entirely dedicated to LGBTQIAP+ issues at an official Star Trek convention. Star Trek has always imagined a better and more progressive future and this panel will examine how Star Trek has tackled the issues of sexuality and gender normativity. This issue also takes on special significance with Discovery showrunner Bryan Fuller announcing that the new series will prominently feature a gay character. Panelists Dr. Katia Perea, Carsen Chodos, and Alex Wood moderate this discussion.

The Women of Star Trek Reflect on 50 Years

12:00 PM – 1:00 PM
Location: 1A10

Continuing the discussion started at the Las Vegas Star Trek Convention, Amy Imhoff hosts an all-star panel of female Star Trek actors to discuss the legacy and importance of the women in Star Trek over the past 50 years. Terry Farrell (Jadzia Dax), Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troi), and Nana Visitor (Kira Nerys) will be on-stage to talk about their experiences first-hand and what they expect to see from Trek in the future!

So there you have it, the upcoming panels from Mission New York that we’re excited about! (Click here for a comprehensive list of the panels featured Friday through Sunday).

But of course, there’s so much more to be excited about, including the Original Series Set Tour that will feature a fully functional bridge and transporter sets and the Star Trek gaming zone, which will feature interactive demos of Star Trek Bridge Crew, Star Trek Online, and Star Trek Timelines!

And the official Starfleet Academy Experience will be open all weekend long at the Intrepid museum nearby for convention goers to visit and get a taste of Starfleet training first hand!

It’s safe to say we’re definitely excited for Mission New York and TrekNews.net will be reporting live from the convention. We hope to see you all there!
