I’d say that’s a pretty good “first guest”. 🙂 Depending on how things work out for me financially over the next few months, it may be time I make my way to one of these Vegas cons!

Sounds like a great start so far.

BTW – I’m expecting a number of folks who posted regularly at Trekmovie.com to start showing up here now that the site seems to have been abandoned.

I’d like to see Patrick brought back along with Marina. Is there a reason she doesn’t do the Creation events?

Thanks for the welcome guys- very kind.

I’ve had a lazy Sunday and put TMP Directors Cut in to listen to the Commentary and it got me wondering if Stephen Collins ever did any Convention appearances over the years? I’m sure he’d have got a great reception. Will Decker was a terrific character I thought.

      Hi, Buzz!

I agree with you about Decker. And Collins’ contribution to the TMP commentary was really good. He had some insightful things to say about Trek.

        September 12, 2011 at 5:35 am

Hey Vults, great to know we have somewhere to continue our chats my friend.

Collins was indeed an interesting contributor to the commentary. He’s a talented actor too. I really liked him as Decker, which was quite an achievement given how much I loved Kirk when I was 14. I went into that movie ready to hate him for stealing the Enterprise!

Every time i watch TMP i come away with a fresh respect for the Movie it was. There is no doubt the Directors cut is the very best version. For the sheer scope and subject matter and for what they achieved under such pressure the film will always have a special place in my heart.

I couldn’t agree more, Buzz. And I feel guilty now because when I first saw it (the original cut) I thought it was a tremendous bore. Years later, I watched the director’s cut and man oh man, what a difference! It’s now one of my favorite Trek movies. Easily in my top five. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched the shot of the Enterprise coming through the V’ger energy blast at the end of the movie. Just beautiful. And Kirk’s final line “Out there… that’a way.” The perfect way to start the Trek movie series.

            September 12, 2011 at 8:22 pm

I always loved the film myself but wasn’t blind to its flaws. That it dared to be different at a time the whole World expected more Star Wars is now its greatest achievement I think.
It has heart and soul and idea’s and thoughtfulness. It challenges the audience in a way that no Trek movie has dared to do since, though some episodes have tried.
I’m delighted that you find much to enjoy and wonder at in TMP, Vults. I wish you could have been there in ’79.

            September 12, 2011 at 9:23 pm

Yeah, me too. Must have been really something to see on the big screen!

My first Trek movie in a theater was Undiscovered Country. For that reason (other than the fact it’s a good movie) it will always hold a special place with me. After that, I managed to see Generations (unfortunately), First Contact (a breath of fresh air) and Trek ’09 (a mixed bag, though I think the Kelvin sequence was some of the best Trek committed to film) on the big screen. Still looking forward to the new one when it comes out… maybe in… 2025 or so.  😉

            September 13, 2011 at 5:48 am

As concise and accurate review of those films as i’ve seen, Vults.
What did you make of the other TNG outings?
I may be a bit perverse but I kind of enjoyed Insurrection. Admittedly it has been the only Trek i never saw on the big screen so my expectations were lowered by watching it on DVD.
The poor reviews and my general lack of interest in the TNG crew being my reason for not going to the cinema to watch it.

And, mate, the joy of seeing the 1701 on the big screen for the first time in TMP was really something. It was thrilling. Unfortunately i was aware of the palpable disappointment with the movie in people around me and found myself defending the film against charges of ‘it was boring’ among my schoolmates! I should have just smiled that gentle smile of someone who knows better. 😉

If only they could have released it as The Directors Cut in the first place. It wouldn’t have pleased the Wookie Lovers but it would have found more favour in general I think.

First Contact is the only TNG movie I can really sit down and enjoy without anything bugging me. Generations would’ve been good if it had just been a strait up TNG outing. I didn’t see Insurrection or Nemesis in a theater because they didn’t look all that interesting to me (plus, I was going through a phase when I was too cool for Star Trek. Yeah, crazy, I know). But I agree that Insurrection is the better of the two. They seemed to be trying for something original, and I always have respect for that. Nemesis came across as a very expensive fan film. And Patrick Stewart looked utterly bored with Trek at that point. Can’t say I blame him.

I think TMP’s reputation has improved over the years, and the DC definitely helped in that regard. I wouldn’t mind seeing Paramount do one with The Final Frontier. Give it some decent special effects and… okay, it would probably still be a lousy movie, but a little more polish couldn’t hurt.

Again, as with TMP, I am aware of TFF’s failings but i can watch it from time to time. I always enjoy the character moments and their interactions.
I’m not sure about letting the Director loose on it though! Bill does have vision but he is primarily an actor. One seems to get in the way of the other with him! Maybe a fresh, impartial, pair of eyes could make something more satisfying out of it.

FC is a terrific piece of film making. Frakes can be very proud of his work on that movie. I particularly love the score.
Well, as for Nemesis, it was just a messy mish-mash. I really disliked the clumsy ‘killing’ and immediate resurrection of Data. Just cynical manipulation of the fans I thought. He’s dead- ah no wait, he isn’t dead. Really properly, cynical. At least when they killed Kirk they left him dead!

I do think its fair to add its doubtful that we will be discussing Trek ’09’s merits in 32 years!!
Or will we? We’ll probably still be waiting for Anthony to update TM regarding its sequel!

            September 13, 2011 at 9:58 pm

Yeah, I think Final Frontier would have gone down as one of the better Treks if the special effects had been done by ILM like the others and the script had been given one more going over. The character moments, plus the “hidden pain” scenes, are some of the best, and I actually kind of liked the Sybok character. Although, I may be a bit biased; Lawrence Luckenbill is from my hometown.  😀

Can’t say how Trek ’09 will be remembered in the long run. I think much of it depends on how this new movie series proceeds. Just as TWOK has helped TMP’s reputation somewhat, the new movie may do the same for Trek ’09. Who knows?

Jonathan Frakes jokingly inquired of promoter Adam Malin during his Saturday appearance, “Why have you guys blacklisted Marina?”  Malin quipped, “I know of another guy I would like to blacklist…”

The Creation guys have always been crooks.  I stopped going to their events when they attempted to substitute a trick dog show for Star Trek content.  No kidding, we paid extra for a ST event and instead we got dogs jumping through hoops.  Adam and Gary are criminals.

I’m glad that there’s another Trek site to go to after Trekmovie.  I’m surprised this site doesn’t have more visitors–it’s great!

There, there, …Plomeek Soup! There is no real news here either… Everyone is awaiting that “announcement” about the movie – to be or not to be, to direct or not direct and so it goes on and on and on and on……………………………………………………………………………………

      • Enterprisingguy

        September 12, 2011 at 1:35 pm

        Hi Keachick.

True….the news isn’t what we’ve all been hoping for. But it’s something. I’m just happy to have something that we can all talk about to hold us over. Even having an episode to discuss is better than enduring the (increasingly) long silence regarding the hotly anticipated movie announcement.

      Welcome Plomeek Soup!

None of the writers from years back. None of the directors. Or veteran producers. Or script supervisors or wardrobe or makeup people – Not even costumers. This is why I don’t go to these things. Actors didn’t create this stuff. I’m not 10.

Your right, Adam is a crook and the majority of the guests can’t stand him but his checks clear. Marina is blacklisted because she won’t pay their inflated price for 8×10’s! Shatner can;t stand Adam but he makes so much money for several hours work he would be an idiot to turn it down.
