On Wednesday night, Star Trek Into Darkness director J.J. Abrams appeared on Conan. During the appearance, Abrams promoted the new film and discussed the now infamous Alice Eve underwear scene. Additionally, he showed off a brief clip of a deleted scene involving Benedict Cumberbatch.

The much-talked about scene involves Eve appearing in her underwear opposite Chris Pine as Kirk. The scene has sparked much online debate and has been described as “‘exploitive” and “unnecessary”.

Abrams explained his intentions for the scene, saying:

The intent was, it’s Kirk. He was always this sort of womanizing character. The idea was to have a beat like that in the midst of all this action and adventure.

I don’t think I quite edited the scene in the right way, but to me it was this sort of balance. There’s a scene earlier where he’s not dressed either. So it felt like it was this sort of — it was a trade-off.

The scene he’s is referring to involves Kirk in bed with two alien women, played by Katie and Kellie Cockrell.

Abrams acknowledged that there may be different interpretations of the scene.

Some people did feel like it was exploiting her. And while she is lovely, I can also see their point of view.

He went on to discuss a scene involving Benedict Cumberbatch that was ultimately deleted from the final cut of the film.

We had a scene with him, where we saw him actually take a shower
