George Takei gave an update on Nichelle Nichols, who suffered a minor stroke last week, on Sunday night at the 69th annual Tony Awards. Takei said his former Star Trek co-star is “resting comfortably” and is able to converse with people.
He also noted that while the prognosis for her condition is “optimistic,” that “she had been slowing down” prior to the stroke.
Last week, Zach McGinnis of Galactic Productions, LLC gave an official update on Nichol’s Facebook page:
The MRI showed that Nichelle Nichols had a MINOR stroke. She will start therapy this morning to evaluate how much damage was done, and try to determine her chances for a full or partial recovery. The therapists will test her hand at writing and legs to see if she can stand and walk on her own. Last night Nichelle remained alert, and cheerful.
When we told her about the love and support coming in from around the world she smiled and asked to see the posts on her facebook.
Thank you again for all of your kind words. Keep them coming because Nichelle is reading them.
Feel free to post your pictures with Nichelle and a story about when you met her.
“We’ve sadly had a lot of losses,” Takei said.
Takei was on the Tonys red carpet promoting his musical “Allegiance,” which hits Broadway in October.

Nichelle Nichols is a wonderfully gracious woman. I’ve met her twice in the last 4 1/2 years. The first was in Los Angeles, the second almost 2 years later in Silicon Valley. She immediately recognized me, remembered my first name and asked me how was life in San Francisco. I was pleasantly floored by Ms. Nichol’s personal greeting. Considering her celebrity, numerous meet and greets with fans, and Octogenarian status, I hadn’t expected her to remember me! Join me in wishing her a full recovery and many more years of health.
