'STAR TREK 3' Needs A Director, Fans Want To #BringInRiker

Following last week’s news of Roberto Orci’s departure from the next Star Trek film, fans worldwide have started a grassroots social media campaign urging Paramount to bring in Jonathan Frakes to fill the vacant director’s chair.

Frakes, best known for playing Commander William T. Riker in the Star Trek: The Next Generation television series and subsequent films, is a seasoned director, with decades of experience in both film and television. Some of his feature film and TV directing credits include Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Insurrection, Clockstopers, Thunderbirds, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise, Roswell, Leverage, NCIS: Los Angeles, and Burn Notice.

The #BringInRiker campaign has been trending on Twitter throughout the weekend and a Facebook page has been set up in hopes to bring one of Star Trek’s most familiar faces back into the fold.

Currently, the name I’m hearing heavily circulated within the industry is Edgar Wright, best known for directing Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End. However, at this point, no official decision from Paramount has been made public.

Would you like to see Frakes take the helm of the Star Trek film franchise? Tell us in the comments below.

Can we not have someone direct a Trek film who is famous for his “bro” movies please.

I think think if Jonathan Frakes died his hair and beard he would look years younger and maybe they would bring him in as director.

    Yes, please #BringInRiker.

Edgar Wright might be a good director, but only of certain types of movies, all comedy. We don’t want ST3 to make us laugh please….

One of the most successful Star Trek movies is a time travel comedy about saving whales. Comedy could work.

I think J. Frakes would be an excellent director for the next Star Trek Film. He’s got the experience in front of and behind the camera when it comes to the Star Trek industry. He knows got enough time on his belt to know all the particulars which has made Star Trek, and could only enhance the film. I’d give him thumbs up, with three snaps and a twist! Paramount can’t go wrong with this one!!!

I’m not super familiar with his directorial work, but I’d imagine he’d be a good candidate for this. I’m cool with it.

SWEET STICKY JESUS YES. Bring back Frakes to direct, he’d have a way better feel for what Star Trek should be!

As a huge TNG fan and a fan of Frakes’ directing skills I say this with nothing but respect, but I don’t think Frakes is the guy for this new ‘breed’ of Star Trek films. Abrams was a big part in re-inventing the franchise for the next generation of fans but also appealed to us old school trekkies at the same time, which is no easy accomplishment. We need to keep moving forward, not bring back the TNG style movies that, even to this die hard fan, lacked a lot of what the new Star Trek movies have in recent years.

Yeah, stylistically, he’s the most vanilla director I can think of. Insurrection nearly killed off trek. It was like a really long and dull episode. First Contact was good, but not because of his directing abilities.

I very much enjoyed the movie “Insurrection”! Please don’t make up stuff just to support your opinion!

I’d like to hear J. Frakes’ ideas. I have confidence in his abilities, and believe it is worth exploring.

    December 11, 2014 at 1:47 pm

Seriously, First Contact and Insurrection were glorified TNG episodes and he was surrounded by a crew he’d been working with for over a decade. You honestly think he can step in and direct something as massive as this? It’s a totally different animal. I swear, between Jonathan Frakes and desperately wanting Shatner back, you hard-core fans only live inside a box that existed from 1987 to 2005. It’s sad really
