Star Trek: Discovery Casts The Walking Dead’s Sonequa Martin-Green In Lead Role
Sonequa Martin-Green has been cast as the lead character “Number One” in Star Trek: Discovery. She will play the lieutenant commander on the USS Discovery when the show launches on CBS All Access next spring.
Martin-Green is best known for her roles as Sasha Williams in AMC’s The Walking Dead and as Tamara in ABC’s Once Upon a Time.
She joins already announced castmembers Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp and Michelle Yeoh.
According to EW, Martin-Green will continue as a series regular on The Walking Dead, in addition to her starring role on Discovery.
Earlier this week, Chris Obi, Shazad Latif and Mary Chieffo were all announced as playing Klingons on the new series.
The first episode of Star Trek: Discovery will premiere with a broadcast TV special on CBS in May. That episode and all subsequent episodes will be exclusively shown in the U.S. on the video streaming service CBS All Access.
Alex Kurtzman, Bryan Fuller and Rod Roddenberry have also been announced as executive producers, with Nicholas Meyer (director of The Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country and co-writer of The Voyage Home) and Kirsten Beyer serving as a writers and consulting producers. Stepping in for Bryan Fuller as co-showrunners are Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts.

Well we now know this Character is Not the Number one from the pilot episode of the original series played by Majel Barrett-Roddenberry.I’m kinda glad this is gonna be a totally different character. The idea that we would have gotten to see the character grow into the First officer of the Enterprise under Captain Pike was one of the better rumors going around.Still i am hopeful for the new series.

I’ve never seen her in anything, but people who have tell me she’s an excellent actress. So her casting is great news!

As a huge Trek fan I do not have a good feeling about this show. First of all it takes place about 10 years before the events on TOS so the future is already a foregone conclusion as well as limiting the show severely. And it is not like it is far enough set in the past, like Enterprise (from 2000 with Bakula) that exploring it would actually be worthwhile (i.e. the beginning of the Federation etc). Secondly, I have read that it is a very different format than the other Treks we know. It will be much more serialized and personal-character driven rather than stand-alone episodes where they explore a new world, issue etc. So that just sounds like space soap opera to me.
Martin-Green is too young to be in charge. It is not believable. You need to look the role and having someone that young in charge already and as the lead of the mission is not believable and is actually reminiscent of the garbage reboot by Abrams where a young (cheating no less) candet who has been suspended from the Academy for cheating gets to command the Enterprise above pretty much all the other 100s of officers who outranks him. Why? Cause Pine was cast the lead and is cool, logic be damned.
Finally, they are PCing it to death before it even begins. I am all for diversity but in this case it is so heavy handed it is off putting.
I really dont get why all these reboots cannot take place past the events of the 2370s (i.e. after DS9, VOY). Why not boldly go where no man has gone before? The opportunities are limitless. Why prequels and splitting timelines etc. What makes Trek amazing and a phenomenon was TNG and the universe that was created with the spin off shows after it…

I, for one, will not watch the series…Why? I will not stream CBS’s pathetic attempt at making double money. Not only do they charge for their poor excuse for a streaming service, we would still have to watch 20 minutes of advertising for each ‘hour’ of programming.
So. F$#* CBS. As much as I would like to see ST: Discovery succeed, I don’t think it will. None of the Trek’ies I know, will pay to watch it. They’ll just wait and catch it on a pirated version someone has thrown up on a throw away pirate site.
